Wisdom from Ancient Greek Philosophy Uncovering Stoicism and a Daily Stoic Journal Complete Bundle of Stoicism Books Book 1 Audible Audio Edition George Tanner Sam Slydell Isaac Mantelli Books Reviews

  • When you hear the term "stoic", you probably picture someone who's stern, unemotional, and robotic. George Tanner's book covers the Stoics and their philosophies in rich detail to show how they felt about logic, emotions, life, and death.
Far from being unemotional, Stoics encouraged serving and helping others as well as feelings for fellow men and women. However, they insisted that Stoics have control over emotions and to take a logical approach to their reactions. For example if someone cheats or steals from a person, the reaction is important. If they flew off the handle and reacted with anger, or as the Stoics preferred did they accept the loss and move on with their lives.
Many of the main practitioners and authors are featured including Cicero, Seneca, Marcus Aurelius, and Zeno. Tanner not only compiled the words and teachings, but their lives and how they lived according to their principles.
Some of the more interesting aspects focused on the Stoic's deaths and how they went to such great lengths to accept it. Reportedly when he knew he was going to be assassinated, Cicero did not beg or try to run. He simply said , "It is not proper what you are doing to me, gentlemen but make sure you do it properly." Seneca was accused of taking part in an assassination attempt against Nero. Though innocent, he was ordered to kill himself by Nero's guards. He severed his veins in response.
Wisdom from Ancient Greek Philosophers covers a fascinating and informative look in the lives of a multi-faceted philosophy that strove to help people become more thoughtful and considerate beings that faced hardship and death with dignity.
  • sto·i·cism the ancient Greek school of philosophy which teaches that virtue, based on knowledge, and that those who live harmoniously with Fate and Providence are indifferent to the endurance of pain or hardship without a display of feelings and without complaint.

Today this Ancient Greek philosophy is making a comeback through cognitive behavioral therapy, and second as a philosophy whose message resonates with many despite its ancient roots. Stoicisim’s emphasis is on living well, paying attention to others, the community, the planet, and focusing daily on virtue rather than pleasure. Stoicism can also help to cope with stress, difficult coworkers, and to live according to our values.

There are many quotes listed in he book from the original creators of Stoicism but this one is my absolute favorite because it is close to my biggest pitfalls quick to anger.

Marcus Aurelius, Meditations[ 53] “As fire when thrown into water is cooled down and put out, so also a false accusationwhen brought against a man of the purest and holiest character, boils over and is at once dissipated, and vanishes and threats of heaven and sea, himself standing unmoved.”

I truly enjoyed this book and I hope you do too!!! Well done!
  • Always been a big fan of stoicism, and have been one of George Tanner for a while now. This book has the best of both a reference book and daily philosophy - just enough to give you something to ponder over your morning coffee.

Stoicism as a rule is very different from our modern way of life, and Mr. Tanner is very clear on the guidelines that have been set down, and how they may apply. Using personal experience, the history, and the ways and means, he truly sets some good examples on how stoicism is beneficial in the modern world.

A great read, a good price, and truly gratifying to see both the Daily Journal and a Breakdown on Stoicism in one place. I really enjoyed the journal, and now I have a book to recommend to friends all in one tome.
  • What a fantastic piece of history/philosophy/life advice this book is. I came to this book expecting an academic explanation and analysis of the Stoics and their philosophies (which it is), but what I came out with was so much more. The Daily Stoic is actually incredibly easy to understand, beautifully poetic how-to advice split into sections themed with the seasons. Each season represents different types of personal challenges Winter has to do with depression, Spring has to do with growing pains, and so forth and so on. For being a very no-nonsense school of philosophy, stoicism is incredibly comforting, in a tough love kind of way. Take this statement by Marcus Aurelius included in the Spring section “To see a man fearless in dangers, untainted with lusts, happy in adversity, composed in a tumult, and laughing at all those things which are generally either coveted or feared, all men must acknowledge that this can be from nothing else but a beam of divinity that influences a mortal body.” How succinctly does that sum up solutions to so many problems? While this purchase will obviously enhance your understanding of what Stoicism is and the history and development of its tenets, it also offers a lot of good, solid advice, that doesn't feel contrived or preachy. Even if you aren't particularly interested in philosophy from an academic standpoint, you will be enriched by the simple to understand, well-laid out advice offered by the Stoics.
